Girls Carry Burden of Water Shortage

They rush to fill their buckets and old plastic cans with the filthy water, as thick as porridge, scooping it up from the puddle with an old tin can or plastic mug. This is the water they will take home. The next nearest source to their village is a trek away of some 30 kilometres.

“If we could not get water here, we would have to trek all the way to Nyalani, 30 km away, or even Kisaya which is 40 km off, through the thorny bush and up and down the valleys. We will use this water,” says Mwanaisha, a 14-year old girl. In this pastoral community, girls have always had to fetch the water, however far away.

“Cows, dogs, and wild animals come to drink from here. Once they have had their fill they defecate in the water,” she adds. She is well aware of how polluted the water is. Nyango is always very dry, but it has never been as bad as this, according to the residents.

Purifying filthy water

“When I reach home I will put a handful of ash in the water, stir it well and add a few leaves from the mnazi tree; letting it stand undisturbed until morning. Then I will come and pour off the clean water on the top into a clean pot, leaving all the filth and the sediment at the bottom,” says Mwanaisha.

She and her friends are also aware of how people are now competing with the animals over the shrinking water supply. “These,” she says, pointing at marks on the ground, “show you that the elephant has just been here. We missed it by minutes. We check for any signs of animals before coming down to the bottom of the pan.”

This has been the source of water for the village’s 34,000 people since 1995. “We will take water from here until it is completely dry,” she says.

“We are now having to buy water for the school and it costs 500 Kenyan Shillings (around £3.30) for 1,000 litres. Soon, no money will be left. And you have to wait for the lorry to come from Makina,” Paul Mopi the headmaster of the primary school explains. “This drought is the worst in 60 years.

“Girls have the heavy burden of finding and fetching water and the boys have taken the cattle to Kisaya and other places where they hear there is still some water and grazing left. But there won’t be enough for all, so there could be fighting. Who knows how many will be back at school after the August holidays. The eldest children are most affected as they have to do a lot more to help their families.”

What Plan is doing

Plan is currently transporting water to drought-hit communities in Kenya, and is planning to improve the supply of clean water in the long term as part of its drought and food crisis response in the region. Where piped water supplies are impractical, solar and wind-powered water systems, like those already put in place by Plan in Machakos, Kenya, are likely to be used.

Across southern Kenya, Plan’s immediate aid will target over 260,000 people, trucking in water, medicine, and delivering therapeutic feeding programmes, supplementary feeding at schools, shelter and hygiene promotion.

In Ethiopia nearly 1 million people are to be assisted with emergency supplies of nutritious food for young children and mothers, school meals, water, seeds, livestock and fertilisers.

In South Sudan, Plan is working with the World Food Programme to ensure that children, especially girls, are supported with nutritious food so they can continue their education. More than 40,490 children from 76 schools are benefiting.

Fabio and friends have explored Portugal Romania C status in their country in the end the question how high. “You’re playing in the street pulling a child came over and asked him, What is your dream Buffalo Bills jerseys? He will tell you: as Cristiano – Ronaldo.” “More and more people in the discussion of who in the end he and Luis Figo of Portugal’s greatest players. People are respected Figo, there is no way you worked hard on the pitch do not like Cristiano.”

Chhnang previously thought C Ronaldo broadcast ads only in the country, came here only to find there are Western language version of this ad, and said to have been broadcast throughout the country for a long time, people who buy this shampoo the more to more. In Madrid, with the weather getting hotter, wearing uniforms more and more people took to the streets. While wearing a shirt R9 has clearly become a kind of fashion. Among friends, we would welcome the guy most girls called “Cristiano”, which can be directly and “set thousands of pet in a” equate.

The Iberian Peninsula have been “C Lo” hurricanes.

His extraordinary ability to adapt quickly to Madrid. Life, Madrid has always been an every day, singing “Nessun Dorma” in the city to the rich nightlife and disco bar known for tens of thousands of Europe. This makes Chicago Bears Jerseys the C Lo carnival like party like a duck. Language, has been to Madrid, people can speak the standard “Mandarin” and proud and laugh at all the field with a local flavor and foreign accent. The Portuguese is despised by all the Spaniards: When you speak Spanish say no good, that is to say Portuguese. First arrived in Spain, Real Madrid No. 9 West’s famous phrase in British English mingled with points. Just a few months, he can already fluent, almost no accent language interview West, and even on the training ground and Raul, Iker, Guti, Higuain, Fernando Gago, west of language as a native language of these unscrupulous players joked.

Competitive context, is not much to say. He only took one season to conquer the Bernabeu, Madrid conquered. The conquest of La Liga, only a matter of time. He has a full 2 months of the time did not play, but catching up in the standings striker Lionel Messi. He once again single-handedly saved the league title is almost complete and will say goodbye to the Galacticos. “09/10 La Liga season, the final stage of Romania belongs to C”, “Whether you like him, you have to admit: the future of Real Madrid, from C Lo decision.” Hat-trick in Real Madrid after 9, La Sexta television commentators lamented that to.

Since the burst of the two captain Raul and Guti may leave a message for next season, the media has been looking for a new generation of leaders in white candidate Corps busy. Do not care about length of service, do not mind where they come from, in fact, the more of a leader to temperament. The C Lo has been good in the squad with his popularity, his persistent pursuit of the spirit of victory, and his Real Madrid fans refer to Dallas Cowboys Jerseys “My God,” the wonderful performance proved that he comes out of my body is this temperament.

Finally understand why Rama Peretz Square in Madrid, will erect a statue for him. If Real Madrid can really win this season, fans will be lining up to go pray. Many Spaniards feel like Portugal is one of their province. But this time, the Portuguese, have become their savior, their leaders, their banners.

Do as the locals do from hotels in Nairobi

If  you’re going to book into hotels  in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, your focus is either solely on  business (and therefore leisure activities are likely to be limited) or you’re  en route to the safari adventure of a lifetime. You could even be on your way  to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 19  341 ft above sea level. Either way, you should definitely consider Southern  Sun Nairobi.

But  while you’re staying at hotels in  Nairobi, it’s fun to do as the locals do. Make the most of the wide  selection of restaurants, which offer vast menus comprising traditional Kenyan  dishes, continental cuisine, and tasty meat treats like the game you’ll find roasting  over charcoal at the famous eatery called Carnivore.

Those  who need caffeine to start the day will love the unmistakable aroma and taste  of Kenya’s coffee. Make a stop at any of the 11 Nairobi Java House outlets to  taste their selection of hand-picked, deep-roasted Arabica beans sourced from  the best coffee-growing land in Kenya  and Ethiopia.  They do Gold Label tea too, which is grown in the rich volcanic soil of the  Kenyan highlands.

For  something different, try the Talisman Restaurant in the suburb of Karen, near hotels in Nairobi. Its leafy setting creates a  welcoming atmosphere. The meals are delicious and the fresh air is a pleasure. The  original 1920s structure comprised a simple mud-and-wattle bungalow with a tin  roof.

If  you want to work off some of that fine dining, get in the mood for some dancing  and experience the vibrant city nightlife. Dolce The Club is one of the popular  nightclubs near hotels in Nairobi that plays  contemporary afro-jazz music.

Kenyans  are good craftsmen and many of their products are locally tailored.

Sandstorm  Kenya  travel bags are the ideal keepsake as they’re made to last a lifetime. They are  handcrafted by men and women from the Luo tribe, who live on the shores of Lake Victoria, and have a reputation for detailed  stitching and finishing.

Sandstorm  Kenya, near hotels in Nairobi, is known for its luxury tents  made for top safari camps. Production of safari-grade travel bags and  accessories was a natural progression and their styles are now available  abroad.

The  bags are made from Kenyan cowhides, individually selected and tanned; camel  hides from sustainable farmed sources in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District; 100%  cotton canvas that is grown, milled and manufactured in Tanzania; and soft  cotton drill lining from Kenya.

Kenya Boran

Introduction

The Boran community is made up of about 4 to 5 million people. There are about one million Boran individuals in Kenya and the rest are found in Ethiopia. In Kenya, the Boran community live in central North Kenya. This community is related to Oromo in Somalia. The highest of the community population of Boran in Kenya live in Marsabit district and the rest in Tana River district and Garissa. The Borana people are pastoralists and had owns large heads of cattle, goats, sheep and camel.

The Borana people are the resultant of the Oromo people who emigrated from the southern highlands of Ethiopia in the 16th century. Most of the related groups of Boran people lives in Ethiopia. During the time of emigration, as they were emigrating heading east, they were piushed back by the Somali community that lead to the south expansion of this community.

The Boran people are also called Borana though the last vowel is silent. The word Borana, in their language, refers to a good person and the language spoken by this particular group of people. These people are from the Cushite speakers of Kenya.

The economy of these people is organized around cattle, sheep, goats and camel. The main responsibility of young men is to herd these animals while women are responsible for home chores. Borana community live in home groups and can move three to four times a year to a distanced of about one hundred kilometres in search of green pastures and water. They build temporary houses that are thatched from top to the ground with grass in contrast with their closely related counterparts Gabbra who weave some parts of their houses as the would move with the woven parts to new location, the carrying of this parts is done either by women or by camel. (Sylla,1994)

Effects of modernization, mechanization, modern education, and the central government on the townspeople of Marsabit

Modernization- this has an effect on the Boran community as they have already began to have a evolution pattern that slowly changing the Boran’s community way of living. Comparing the Boran people who live in the rural areas of Marsabit and those who are living in town, there is a notable difference between the two families. The family that live in the urban areas has been introduced to the need of having new and modern way of living and adopting a new method of economy. Comparing the family that lives in the rural areas, it has no reason to allow their children to attend school, have more modernised way of living like acquiring a modern house, engaging in business but will insist on retaining their tradition method of living and would value animals than anything else especially the poor grade of livestock that has been existing among the pastoralist communities.

The family from the same Borana community that live in Marsabit town would be open to the new opportunities that would be brought about by modernization. In most cases only the families in town takes their children to school and involve in modern activities like rearing dairy cattle that would have more milk production than having boran cows that would produce less that a litre per day.

Though there has been conflict between the modern and the tradition method of living, most of the town dwellers have completely compacted with the modern living pattern and have either .partially or completely done away with the traditions.

The conflict that has been brought about by modernization is that the town families have let the traditions and involved themselves in more modern life like taking children to school, allowing women to take up leadership roles, and doing away with female genital mutilation.

Mechanization- The Borana community that live in the up country have not yet goner mechanized. Most members of this community still perform their duties manually and through the use of animals. For example, during immigration, a rural family would use camel to carry their loads as compared to town family they would use vehicle to carry their loads. The Borana community in the rural areas have not made any effort in going mechanised as they stick to their tradition way of doing things. This makes the two families look completely differently even if they come from the same community.

The rural people don’t have a vast knowledge on the use of machinery that would help the in improving their living standards. If the rural community would use machinery in doing some of the chores, they would expand their economy for they can grow crops and improve their food availability therefore reducing the level of poverty among themselves.

Modern education- modern education has also effected the living of the Boran community in Kenya. As most of them have started realizing the need of education, they are sending their children to school. Modern education has contributed to a number of positive impacted to both town and rural dwellers. This has reduced the number of early marriages, early pregnancies and has also reduced the number of young men who involve themselves in cattle rustling.

Modern education has also contributed to the involvement of this remote community in the office jobs, political issues and other nation building activities. Comparing the formal and informal education that was given to the children of this community, the formal has introduced the community to more modern lifestyle and have managed to leave some of the traditions that were not fair to the community, like girl genital mutilation, women restriction in involving them selves is some activities like leadership and office work.

Central government- The central government of the Marsabit town, through the help of the government of Kenya have worked together and closely with people of Marsabit town. The Boran people who live in the town have to follow strict rules that have been set by the government, these rules are like, no child should be at home who have attained the age of school going as the primary education is offered free through the help of the state government. Children from the families that live in town and families that live in rural areas have a unique difference as the town child can read and write. (Walker,1995)

Conclusion

The Boran community are trying to adopt the modern methods of living by adopting the current requirement in ones life. Education has gained value to the community especially the families that live in town.

Mechanization would be of great benefit if it would be implemented to help the community in achieving some of the benefits that would be brought by the use of machineries like cultivating and adding more food as well as tapping and making effective use of the available rain.

Modernization has on the other hand helped the community attaining and reaching the modern method of living. This has been of great advantage as most of the community members have already adopted the modern standards and done away with the baseless traditions.
