Great Films shot in Kenya

There are numerous Hollywood movies that have been shot in Kenya. Kenya is a beautiful land with spectacular sceneries, which have attracted the eyes of world known movie producers. Below is a selection of some of the blockbusters which had some scenes shot in this magnificent country.


‘Out of Africa’, which was starred by Marylyn Steep, was shot in the Karen Blixen house, with the beautiful Ngong Hills appearing in the background. The movie tells of the life of Karen also highlighting her lover Denys Finch Hatton. The movie won the Academy award for best picture.


‘Born free’ was made a movie from the book with the same title, written by Joy Adamson. It was entirely shot in Kenya, and tells of some rehabilitated lions which were eventually released in the wild. The Born Free foundation was a charity that was formed, whose proceeds are used for preservation roles in Kenya.


‘Mountains of the moon’ was shot in 1989by Bob Rafelson. It won great accolade for its telling of the Nile conquest and the adventurous expedition of Burton and Speke. Some of the diverse locations where it was shot are Lamu, Hell’s Gate, and Lake Turkana.


Angelina Jolie’s ‘Tomb raider: The Cradle of life chronicles’, has also some scenes in Kenya. Acting as Lara Croft, a British aristocrat, she is sent on a mission to save the world from evil Chinese conspiracy. The film is shot in Hell’s gate national park, near the lake Naivasha.


‘The Constant Gardener’, was shot on the southeastern coast of Lake Turkana in a small town called Loiyangalani as well as in Kibera, a section of Nairobi city.


The story goes about a man who seeks to find the forces behind her wife’s murder. It was directed by Fernando Meirelles. The constant gardener trust was established to support the local villagers.


The Masai Mara game reserve has repeatedly been a scene for shooting documentaries about wildlife, such as big cats, crocodiles, wildebeests, elephants and so on. The film ‘Londolozi: The Troubled waters’ captures the ferocious crocodiles of the Mara River that prey on the wildebeests as they cut across the wild water during their annual migration from the Serengeti in northern Tanzania.


‘The Ghost of the Spirit’ captures the tale of the Man-eaters of Tsavo, which were two maneless lions that terrorized the builders of the Kenya-Uganda railways. The lions were known hunt as if for fun and could barely be stopped.


Other films captured in Kenya include Sheena, King Solomon mines, survivor Africa, BBC’s Big Cat Diary, Nowhere in Africa, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The First Grader, and so many others.
