Massage For Infants

Congratulations on becoming a new parent! This is one of the most exciting times in your life, if not the most exciting time in your life. You may be a first time parent and want to start your baby off right. This may be your second, third or even more baby and you have just learned about the benefits of massage for infants.

You may buy only the best formula and/or breast feed your infant. You want to give what is best for your baby. You learn that massage is good for your infant.

The many benefits of massage for infants include: infant massage is great for bonding with your baby. Fathers will bond well with their baby when they give them a massage. You will learn about your baby’s needs and desires better when you give massages to him/her. Your baby will feel the feeling of being loved. Both you and your baby will enjoy the relaxation massage gives him or her. What parent does not like to have their baby sleep? Infant massage promotes better sleep. Keep your baby healthier with massage as it boosts his/her immune system. Your baby will benefit from sensory stimulation when massaged. Massage also improves skin condition. Blood circulation will be improved. Digestion is helped with massage. Respiration is balanced.

Maybe your baby is in pain and you do not know what to do. If your baby is suffering from teething pains or other pains, massage will help relieve this. You will help your baby with gas problems as well as waste elimination. When you massage your precious baby you are stimulating oxytocin which is a hormone that both male and females produce. You and your baby will feel more calm when you massage your baby.

You will feel good knowing that when you massage your baby you are stimulating all of your baby’s body systems such as the circulatory system, elimination system, immune system, nervous system and respiratory system.

Massaging your baby is excellent if you have to work outside of the home and leave your baby. You will spend quality time with your infant when you give him or her a routine massage.

When you are ready to give your sweet baby a massage find a comfortable and quiet place where you will not be distracted. Place your baby in the cradle that is formed when you sit cross-legged. (Once your baby is too big to sit in your leg cradle, simply place him or her next to your outstretched legs on the floor.) Infant massage techniques include looking your baby in the eyes and grasping his/her legs. Move your baby’s legs in a bicycling motion and softly tell your baby, “relax…relax.” Use an edible oil on your baby while massaging him or her.

To rub your baby’s arms and legs use a twisting motion. Roll his or her arms and legs between both of your hands and very gently press your thumbs into his body. When you complete this finish up with light strokes to the legs. Next slide both of your hands along the rib cage from center to sides and back again. Think of it as flattening pages in a phonebook. You and your baby will both benefit when you perform massage for infants.
